If you want a lot of changes that can't be covered by 2-3 tweak mods, give DeI and/or Radious a go. Battles are slow, unit variety is great. Pacing feels good in battle although units sometimes seem to take way too long to die.

It's packed with original features and art, it's complete but the devs are constantly tweaking and improving it, and the gameplay is fun. Definitely what the base game should have been at launch.
WebFood and squalor penalties are reduced, you get more edicts, more armies, more money, etc. Divide et Impera is based on historical accuracy, and makes a lot of things harder. Battles are slower and require tactics to win, flanking is king. Morale is how you win, not annihilating the enemy forces. Their unit packs are the same deal.
